1)No books used by former students are allowed (used books purchased from an internet distributor or a used book store are fine as long as there are no notes in it.)  The books will be checked and confiscated and kept if they are from former students.

  Read the comic and create a bookmark that depicts one of the characters from the comic, a description and visual of him/her, a short summary of the plot, and your opinion of the book IN SPANISH. There will also be a quiz the first day of class.

Summer Reading Assignment 2008

Instructions

 

  • All students are required to read one book of their choice from the List Below. All books should be available at the public library or can be purchased through any bookstore.
  • Students are required to write a 1000 word (10 pt. font New Times Roman, double spaced, 1 inch margins, use word count option) reflective paper for the book of their choice. These are due the first day back to school, and should utilize correct grammar and spelling. “Borrowing” ideas and wording from on-line or other sources is considered plagiarism and is not permitted. It will result in a grade of zero for this assignment, and disciplinary action.   
  • This paper will be a starting point in your analysis and understanding of world history. It should be a reflective paper (reflecting your own thoughts about the concepts and ideas), and not just a summary of the author’s work.
  • Please use this format:

Paragraph A: Discuss the historical setting, and the author’s thesis or plot.

Paragraph B: Examine and explain the author’s evidence or characterizations.

Paragraph C: Assert how the book relates to any or all of the six overarching world history themes listed below.

Paragraph D: Choose a quote from the book (cite the page #), and explain why it is significant to your understanding of world history.

1.     Impact of interaction among societies (trade, systems of international exchange, war, diplomacy)

2.     Change and continuity across the world history periods

3.     Impact of technology and demography on people and the environment (population growth and decline, disease, manufacturing, migrations, agriculture, weaponry)

An interesting account of Zheng and his sea voyages to the Indian Ocean, just before Europeans rounded the tip of Africa .

 


 

Latin America

  • Don’t Be Afraid Gringo by Elvia Alvarado

Alvarado tells the story of her life and the life of the people of Honduras. Read it and understand the struggle against tyranny of the poor.

 

  • Imagining Argentina by Lawrence Thorton

A political novel set in Argentina during the late 1970’s, it is the mesmerizing story of Carlos Rueda, who has trouble coming to grips when his wife disappears.

Europe

  • Life in a Medieval City by Joseph and Frances Gies

This is a pleasing narrative about life and death, midwives and funerals, books and authors, town government and business.

 

  • Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King

This is an historically accurate account of the struggle between Michelangelo and Pope Julius II, which resulted in the masterpiece on the Sistine Ceiling.

 


 

Middle East

  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
