Freshman Year

  • Focus on establishing a strong GPA.  Shoot for 3.25 or better.
  • Join a club and/or sports team.  Leadership positions are usually given to students who have a history with the club/organization.
  • Document CAS hours; look for an organization to stay with for service.  Again, this is establishing dedication and perseverance and also should allow the student to move in to more responsible positions with the service organization.  Students grow immeasurably (and schools like to see!) through a long term project that the student conceives, plans for and carries out.
  • Register for the Congressional Award: www.congressionalaward.org.
  • Look for ways to compete in the subject of the student’s choice:  Science Fair, poetry contests, band adjudications, math academic games, etc.  Winning competitions says a lot more about the student than “was a member of.”
  • Should take PSAT in October.  Deadline for signing up is in Sept.
  • Will take AP Human Geography test in May
  • Establish routines that work:
    • Mini-saves to hard drive and disk
    • Printer ink check periodically
    • Use of planner
