Reporting procedures
If your child is absent, then the parent or guardian has one of three ways in which to notify school officials, either the day of the absence or within 10 days of the absence. (Otherwise, the absence may not be categorized as an "excused absence".)
a. Call (772) 219-1864
b. Email sfhsattend@martin.k12.fl.us
c. Send a signed note with your child upon his (her) return to school
Your message should identify your child's name and the reason for the absence. Following this procedure, however, does not guarantee the absence will be categorized as an "excused" absence. For more information, please refer to the student handbook.
A mandatory parent conference is necessary if a student accumulates five "unexcused" absences.
The school district uses an automatic-phone-dialer system to notify parents or guardians on the evening of the absence, if the student misses one or more classes that day. The calls are made between 5:45 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (We realize that many parents have more than one child attending school; therefore, a parent may not know which child is absent. Unfortunately, the system cannot identify the child by name.)
IF YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING ATTENDANCE MESSAGES - CONTACT THE SCHOOL TO
VERIFY YOUR CONTACT PHONE NUMBER.
Appeals
Students are required by law to
be in attendance 90% of the grading period.
After 5 or more unexcused absences an attendance review (appeal) must be
completed.
A student on the appeals list MUST PASS their final exam or they
will fail the class.
PARENTS - PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SEND
IN ATTENDANCE NOTES so your child has excused absences when it's
appropriate, thus avoiding the appeal's process. This occurs at
the end of each grading period.
It's the law...
The law states that any student under the age of 18 shall lose one's driver license or permit if he or she misses
more than 10% or 18 days.
The computer-generated list of students with poor attendance is automatically sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles in Tallahassee. The student's privilege to drive is then suspended until age 18 or a documented pattern of good attendance is established and a fee is paid to the DMV to reinstate the driver's license.
